“The Future Is Now” was in 2010. A cross between hope, dreaminess, space and apocolyptica. Small Ponds played. It was awesome.

2009 …the year of the 80′s. We saw Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Pacman, mullets, flashdancers, MTV heroes and more. We also saw our first year of our Pinecar Classic competition.

What Happens on Kirby Stays on Kirby…except for not really. A complete downpour only added to the fun with this Lucky #7 Kirby Derby Day. We had showgirls, multiple Elvises, slot machines, gamblin men, weddings, races and men in drag. What more could you ask for?

This 6th Kirby Derby brought a new event, the “Drag Races.” Somehow, men in drag fit with the Pirates theme, so we went with it, and now, it’s one of the most memorable contests in Raleigh…

2006 was Mach 5, and the first year of the Soapbox Derby Races! The parade not only had a host of new floats, but the newly ordained Pope came to race! We were young and naive in those early race days…days when cardboard, and plywood trash and even trash cans were used as cars.

After being the breakout hit of “The Bride of Kirby Derby” in 2004, Bridezilla was set to make her encore appearance at Kirby Derby 2005. Just 2 months before the big event, she was kidnapped out of her back yard garden. She was spotted once, stranded in the median of Centennial Blvd, but then she was never seen again. In an effort to rescue her, we dedicated the entire 2005 event to her persona. Some of her best friends and relatives, and even a nemesis or two showed up, but Bridezilla was lost to us forever.

Well, isn’t the third in a series always “The Bride of…?”
2004 was the year of the Bride. There was a wedding chapel entry and a divorce court exit. Bridezilla made her fashionable appearance that year.

IT was 2003, the second year of Kirby Derby Day, and simply known as “The Sequel.” It was a memorable year, but not all for great reasons. KDD03 was the year of the dark monkey. Aside from that, there were great moments and great floats. The Car of Freedom won the parade that year, speaking volumes of where we were as a people.

Kirby Derby. The first year. Back when we were innocent. Back when the theme was “Kirby Derby.” Back when we didn’t have a care in the world and had no clue there would ever be a second one. The first year consisted simply of cocktail hour, parade, party. And it was great. Kickin Grass played. Carla announced. Scott and Karen judged. Good times.
